What "AI Search" Is, and Why Your Business Might Be Invisible On It

Not long ago, finding a plumber, a coffee roaster, or a pair of hunting boots meant typing into Google and scrolling through a list of blue links. That habit is changing fast — and if you own a business, the change is already affecting whether new customers can find you.

Here's what's happening. Instead of searching and scrolling, more people now just ask. They open ChatGPT, Google's AI, or Perplexity and type something like, "What's the best waterproof jacket for cold, wet weather?" And instead of ten links, they get an answer: two or three specific recommendations, in a confident paragraph, with the businesses named right there.

This isn't a fringe behavior anymore. According to the Pew Research Center's "Americans and AI 2026" report, about half of US adults now use AI chatbots, and 60% say they read the AI-generated summaries that appear in their search results. That's not the future — that's today.

So here's the uncomfortable question: when someone asks AI about the exact thing you sell, does your name come up?

For most businesses, the answer is no. A 2026 study from Omni Eclipse found that roughly 88% of businesses are invisible in ChatGPT — meaning when buyers ask for a recommendation, those companies simply never appear. They're not ranked low. They're not on page two. They're just… not in the conversation at all.

Think about what that means. For twenty years, being "findable" meant showing up on Google. You could measure it, you could work on it, and if you ranked well, customers found you. But AI doesn't work like a list of links. It reads the web, decides which businesses it trusts and understands, and then names a small handful. If it doesn't clearly understand who you are and what you do, it skips you — and you never even know it happened. There's no "page two" to check.

This is why "AI search visibility" has quickly become something every business owner needs to care about, whether you sell software or sell sandwiches. The buyers are already there. The only question is whether the AI is sending them to you or to a competitor.

The good news: being invisible isn't permanent, and fixing it doesn't require you to become a tech expert. It comes down to making your business easy for AI to understand, trust, and recommend — the same way you'd make it easy for a new employee to describe what you do. That's a solvable problem.
